What Goes Down the Drain in a County With 550 Lakes

Polk County sits on a limestone aquifer that supplies its drinking water, holds more than 550 lakes, and had roughly 113,000 septic systems the last time anyone counted. That combination makes the question of what you rinse down a sink less abstract here than almost anywhere else.

Three facts that make Polk County different

More than 550 lakes

Polk County government describes the county as having more than 550 lakes for fishing, boating and recreation. You will see the figure 554 repeated online; we could only find that in tourism marketing, so we are using the county number.

2.6 million septic systems statewide

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection estimates 2.6 million onsite systems in operation in Florida — about 12 percent of all the septic systems in the United States — serving roughly 30 percent of the state population. For Polk County specifically, an adopted FDEP document put the count at approximately 112,848 as of 2004. No newer county figure appears to be published.

90 percent of drinking water is groundwater

FDEP states that groundwater provides 90 percent of Florida drinking water. The Southwest Florida Water Management District, which covers Polk County, describes the upper Floridan aquifer as the main source for northern and central Florida. The water you drink and the water your drain empties toward are the same system.

The fact that changed our mind

USGS found a floor cleaner in groundwater

A septic tank is not a filter for household chemistry. In 2011 the U.S. Geological Survey sampled groundwater downgradient of two septic system networks and detected hormones, detergent degradation products, fragrances, insect repellent, sunscreen additives, pharmaceuticals — and a floor cleaner — moving into shallow groundwater.

That is a federal agency finding a household cleaning product in the water table below a septic drainfield. It is the single most concrete thing we found in researching this article, and it is why we bothered to write it.

The broader picture is older and larger. USGS national reconnaissance of 139 streams found one or more wastewater-related organic compounds in 80 percent of streams sampled; half contained seven or more, and about a third contained ten or more. Detergent metabolites were one of the categories measured.

What in a cleaner is actually a problem

  • Nonylphenol ethoxylates. EPA describes them as produced in large volumes and used in consumer laundry detergents and personal care products, and states plainly that they are highly toxic to aquatic life.
  • Quaternary ammonium compounds — the disinfecting agents in most household disinfectant sprays and wipes. A 2023 review in Environmental Science and Technology reports increasing environmental release and adverse ecological effects including acute and chronic toxicity to susceptible aquatic organisms, while acknowledging that exposure to mixtures from multiple sources remains largely unassessed.
  • Nitrogen and phosphorus. EPA states directly that cleaning product ingredients containing phosphorus or nitrogen can contribute to nutrient loading in water bodies.
Honesty check. What is documented is that these compounds are present in streams and in groundwater near septic systems, that some are toxic to aquatic organisms in laboratory conditions, and that septic systems do not remove them. What is not documented is that ordinary household cleaning at normal volumes has caused measurable harm to any particular Polk County lake. We are not going to claim that, because no source supports it.

Nutrient pollution is not a theory here. EPA explains the mechanism: too much nitrogen and phosphorus makes algae and algae-like bacteria grow faster than the ecosystem can handle, which can strip oxygen from the water and, in the case of cyanobacteria, release toxins. FDEP adds that increases in nutrients can worsen the extent, duration and intensity of blooms, and that reducing nitrogen and phosphorus helps.

Lake Hollingsworth

Lakeland

Verified impaired for nutrients. The adopted total maximum daily load calls for a 68 percent reduction in total nitrogen and a 75 percent reduction in total phosphorus. Its trophic state index exceeded the threshold of 60 in every year from 1996 to 2002.

Lake Hancock

Between Lakeland and Bartow

Verified impaired for nutrients on an annual average trophic state index of 83.5, against a threshold of 60. Also impaired for dissolved oxygen. Lake Hancock is the headwaters of the Peace River.

Lake Ariana and Eagle Lake

Auburndale area

Both on the state verified list of impaired waters, with an adopted nutrient TMDL. The same FDEP document counts roughly 571 septic tanks in the Lake Ariana watershed and 245 in the Eagle Lake watershed.

Eight lakes in the Southern Chain verified impaired for nutrients — Cannon, Howard, Jessie, Lulu, May, Mirror, Shipp and Idylwild — plus Haines and Smart in the Northern Chain.

FDEP states in two separate adopted documents covering Polk County waters that onsite sewage systems can be a source of nutrients, pathogens and other pollutants to both groundwater and surface water.

One correction to something you may read elsewhere: there is no nutrient Basin Management Action Plan covering Polk County lakes. FDEP nutrient BMAPs cover the Indian River Lagoon, Lake Okeechobee, the Caloosahatchee, the St. Lucie, Lake Jesup, Wekiva and others — not Polk. What Polk County has are adopted TMDLs, which is a different and weaker instrument. Also note these TMDLs date from 2006 to 2018; check the current FDEP Integrated Report for present-day status.

Read the label like a lawyer

What green, biodegradable and non-toxic legally mean

The Federal Trade Commission regulates environmental marketing claims through the Green Guides, 16 CFR Part 260. They are stricter than most people expect, and most bottles on a grocery shelf would not survive a close reading.

General environmental benefit — section 260.4

It is deceptive to misrepresent, directly or by implication, that a product offers a general environmental benefit. In practice this means that words like green, eco-safe and environmentally friendly, standing alone with nothing behind them, are the exact thing the rule targets.

Biodegradable — section 260.8

An unqualified degradable claim is deceptive if the item does not completely decompose within one year after customary disposal. And the rule adds the part almost nobody knows: unqualified degradable claims are deceptive for items customarily thrown in landfills, incinerators or recycling facilities, because those places do not create conditions where decomposition happens in a year. For a cleaning product the relevant environment is the sewer or the septic tank, and the rule contemplates exactly that — a marketer needs scientific evidence the product breaks down in a reasonably short period in the sewage system environment.

Non-toxic — section 260.10

The highest-risk word on any cleaning label. A non-toxic claim likely conveys that the product is non-toxic both for humans and for the environment generally, and a marketer needs competent and reliable scientific evidence for both, or must clearly qualify the claim. We do not use the word.

Seals and certifications — section 260.6

A third-party seal does not transfer responsibility. The marketer is still liable for substantiating every claim the seal communicates, and generic environmental seals need qualification limiting them to a specific benefit.

One label that means something

EPA Safer Choice, and how to check it yourself

EPA Safer Choice is a government certification with published criteria, and roughly 2,000 products currently qualify. Every ingredient has to meet criteria for carcinogenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, aquatic toxicity and environmental persistence.

Some of the specifics are concrete enough to be useful:

  • For products released directly to water, generally more than 60 percent mineralization in a ready biodegradation test.
  • Ingredients with aquatic toxicity values below 10 mg/L are not allowed in Safer Choice direct-release products.
  • Certified products must meet the Ozone Transport Commission VOC restrictions.
  • Manufacturing facilities are subject to a site audit once per three-year partnership period.

EPA maintains a searchable database of certified products. If a cleaning company tells you their products are safer, that database is where you check — not their brochure. We tell clients exactly which brands we carry so that lookup takes thirty seconds.

EPA itself warns consumers to be careful interpreting vague or generic claims on products such as environmentally friendly, eco safe or green. That warning is from EPA, about the entire category we sell into. We would rather you read it.

The other half of the argument

The air inside the house

EPA reports that concentrations of many volatile organic compounds are consistently higher indoors than outdoors — up to ten times higher — and that while people are using products containing organic chemicals, they can expose themselves and others to very high pollutant levels. Cleansers and disinfectants are on EPA list of sources.

Here is where we have to be careful, because this is where green cleaning marketing usually stops being honest. EPA states that it has no authority to regulate household products from an indoor air perspective, and cautions that products labeled no VOC or low VOC can still contain volatile organic chemicals that are toxic, sometimes at high levels, because some toxic chemicals are exempt from the VOC definition. EPA does not say lower-VOC products are safer.

So the honest version is this: nobody federally regulates what your household cleaner puts into your air, a low-VOC label alone does not prove much, and that is precisely why a certification with published ingredient criteria is worth more than an adjective on a bottle.

What the research on cleaning and lungs actually found

The best-known study followed 6,230 people across 22 European study centres for more than twenty years. It found accelerated decline in lung function among women who cleaned at home and among occupational cleaners: roughly 22 millilitres per year of FEV1 decline against 18.5 for women who did not clean. The authors concluded that exposures related to cleaning activities may constitute a risk to long-term respiratory health.

The limits matter as much as the finding. The effect was not significant in men, and it did not translate into diagnosed chronic airway obstruction. The absolute difference is about 3.6 millilitres per year — small annually, meaningful only cumulatively over decades. And it is observational, which means association, not proof of cause.

Separately, NIOSH states without qualification that chemicals in some cleaning products can cause asthma or trigger asthma attacks, and that mixing products containing bleach and ammonia can cause severe lung damage or death. Never mix cleaners. That one is not a marketing point, it is a safety rule.

Where we land

What we will and will not tell you

We offer a plant-based line as an option, not a default

You choose it when you book. It costs more than our standard line because the products cost more, and the cost is included in your estimate when you select it. If it is not worth it to you, our standard line cleans the same house.

We name the products

You get the brand names before we start, so you can look up any ingredient or check the EPA Safer Choice database yourself. A cleaning company that will not tell you what it is spraying in your kitchen is telling you something.

We do not use the word non-toxic

Under 16 CFR 260.10 that word carries an evidentiary burden for human health and for the environment. We do not hold that evidence, so we do not use it.

We do not claim our products save your lake

What we can say is that septic systems do not remove these compounds, that USGS has found household cleaning chemistry in groundwater below drainfields, and that four sets of Polk County waters carry adopted nutrient limits. What one household does with one bottle is not measurable. What a whole county does with them is.

We do not disinfect by default

CDC says cleaning with soap and detergent removes most harmful germs and reserves disinfection for specific situations. Quaternary ammonium disinfectants are the compounds under the most active environmental scrutiny right now. Using less of them, in fewer places, is both the cheaper and the better-supported choice.

Common questions

Does plant-based mean it cleans less well?

It means different chemistry, and it changes what the product is good at. Acids still cut limescale, surfactants still lift grease, and on our hard water a plant-based product handles daily soil fine. Where the standard line still wins is heavy grease and heavy mineral buildup that has been left for months. We will tell you which one your house actually needs rather than upselling by default.

I am on septic. Does it matter what you use?

Two ways. Strong disinfectants going down the drain in volume can affect the bacterial activity a septic tank depends on, and as the USGS work shows, what the tank does not break down keeps moving. We do not pour disinfectant into drains as a routine practice in any home, septic or sewer.

Is vinegar the answer to everything?

No. It is excellent on limescale and hard water film, which we have plenty of here. It should never touch marble, travertine, limestone or onyx, and it is not a disinfectant. Using it as one is how people end up cleaning a surface they thought they had sanitized.

Why does the eco option cost more?

Because the products cost more per ounce, and nothing else. There is no markup for the word green. The difference is folded into your estimate when you select it, so you see one number rather than a surcharge on the invoice.
